Updating Your Resume to Pass the ATS Algorithm

Think creating a resume is easy? Then you probably haven't tried getting around the ATS (Applicant Tracking System) algorithm!

Many larger organizations nowadays utilize an applicant tracking system which is used to scan through resumes. Yes, that makes almost everything easier (for them) and harder (for you) at the same time. So if you want your application to be seen by a human, the ATS must first approve it. This means you need to employ effective strategies in crafting your resume if you want it to pass machine-driven software.

But how do you ensure that your resume will pass the ATS and make it to the hiring manager? The short answer is: write a flawless resume (no pressure, right?). The longer answer involves these points.

Stick to the basics.

We get it! The resume templates you find within Microsoft Word or Canva are pretty to look at. Who wouldn’t want to hire you for submitting such a sleek looking resume? Well, here is the problem… the algorithm cannot read and interpret those fancy templates. This results in over 40 percent of resumes instantly being flagged as incompatible file types that instantly get removed from the equation.

If you are actively job seeking, you are more than likely taking a considerable amount of time applying at various companies. The last thing you want is to never even be a consideration because of the formatting of your resume.

Avoid making these mistakes.

  • Do not add pictures, logos, graphics, charts or tables

  • Do not add colors

  • Do not use fancy bullet points

  • Do not add fancy fonts - stick to the basics, such as Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica…

  • Do not put important contact information in the header or footer of your document - not every ATS can read those sections

  • Upload your resume in the file format specified by the employer - if none is noted, such as PDF, then upload your file as a Word document

Focus on the keywords.

It is important that you pay attention to the keywords and phrases that are utilized in the job listing. You will want to ensure that you are using that same language within your resume. For example, if the job description calls for “advertising skills”, you will want to update your “marketing skills” accordingly. And lastly, don’t overdo it on the keywords! They should be incorporated throughout your resume, but the text should still have a natural flow to it.
